Showcase #16: Susan Frost

Showcase #16: Susan Frost

Susan Frost's minimalist forms explore subtle gradations of colour and tone.

Through meticulous glazing techniques, she creates an evolving spectrum of hues that span rich creams and lemon yellows, through to vintage greens and inky blues.  This palette is applied to the surfaces of an unfolding progression of functional vessels in varying sizes that have been wheel thrown in Lumina porcelain.  Frost uses the evocative properties of colour to highlight the sculptural qualities of form, which she exploits to its fullest potential with interlocking works that stack and nest together.

For Showcase #16, Frost has expanded her practice with the introduction of surface decoration.  Geometric structures, repetitive patterning and grids are executed with a restrained precision and used to create a cohesive whole.

Curator: Susan Ostling

The Australian Ceramics Association received 94 proposals for the exhibition which made the selection enormously difficult. Twenty nine (29) proposals were successful.
The artists selected are Mollie Bosworth, Amanda Bromfield, Kirsten Coelho, Greg Daly, John Dermer, Kate Dorrough, Lynda Draper, Merran Esson, Fiona Fell, Cathy Franzi, Simone Fraser, Neville French, Susan Frost, Shannon Garson, Steve Harrison, Fiona Hiscock, Janetta Kerr-Grant, Diamando Koutsellis, Kylie Rose McLean, Sarah Ormonde, Vicki Passlow, Dianne Peach, Julie Pennington, Robyn Phelan, Ben Richardson, Tania Rollond, Liz Stops, Prue Venables and Toni Warburton.

In selecting proposals, Susan Ostling said, “My aim was to look for work that showed either a high degree of resolution or a high degree of experimentation and inquiry in a particular direction. And while there was not a theme to the exhibition, I felt sure there would be affinities and correspondences in the range of work currently being made. This has indeed occurred with the following threads emerging from the selected proposals: the environment and nature as a source for ideas; the aesthetics of still life; rigorous material investigation; the figure as a source of delight and wonder; and aspects of function. I feel sure the exhibition will take the pulse and map the interesting ceramic practice and inquiry that is taking place as well as of course, stimulate enthusiastic discussion!”
